quick facts
about dallas

The history of Dallas, Texas dates back to the mid-19th century when European settlers arrived in the area, which was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes. The town was officially incorporated in 1873, and during the early years, it was primarily a farming community with a population of around 500. In the late 19th century, the Houston and Texas Central Railway arrived in Dallas, bringing new economic opportunities and growth to the area. Throughout the 20th century, Dallas continued to develop and expand, with the establishment of new businesses and industries, including manufacturing and technology. In the 1980s and 1990s, Dallas experienced significant growth as a result of the booming Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and it became a hub for many corporate headquarters, including J.C. Penney and Frito-Lay. Today, Dallas is a thriving city with a diverse population, excellent schools, and a strong economy that continues to attract new residents and businesses.Today, Dallas occupies around seventy-two square miles and has a population of over 272,000.

Over the past decade, Dallas has been designated as the best place to live in the US by CNN Money magazine three times. It was also selected as the safest city in both 2010 and 2011 by Forbes. Dallas schools consistently score among the highest in the nation in a variety of studies.

Driving in Dallas can be both enjoyable and challenging. Dallas has a well-designed street system with wide, well-maintained roads that are easy to navigate. However, traffic can be heavy during rush hour, particularly on major thoroughfares such as Preston Road, Central Expressway, and the President George Bush Turnpike.

Dallas adopted a master plan for its road system. The plan calls for the use of multiple-lane highways for major roads and allows for higher speed limits, generally 40 mph, but sometimes up to 55 mph on the northern section of Preston Road approaching Frisco. Dallas is served by several freeways. Central Dallas is bordered to the east by U.S. Highway 75, the west by Dallas North Tollway, the south by the new President George Bush Turnpike, and the north by Texas State Highway 121 (Sam Rayburn Tollway). Preston Road (Texas State Highway 289) is a major thoroughfare that runs through the west side of the city.
