Long time customers and guests line up for Kookie Haven for the last time as the bakery sets for permanent closure according to a Dallas Morning News article from July 11. They say,
“Beloved Black-owned bakery, Kookie Haven, permanently closed in Oak Cliff on Sunday, July 10, citing the sky-rocketing costs of ingredients as well as supply chain challenges.
Owners (and sisters) Darla McCuen and Nita Briggs announced via social media last week that they would be permanently closing, and asked customers to stop by for a last hurrah and enjoy some treats. “Even though it’s very sad, we still want to celebrate with our customers,” McCuen said.
On Sunday, customers waited in line for hours to get their last tastes of cookies and “square bites” cupcakes in popular flavors like red velvet, wedding cake, German chocolate cake, and banana, in addition to their popular “stuffers” — a cookie and cupcake combo. Kookie Haven was also known for their vegan offerings.”
Of course, the owners couldn’t help but feel emotional as they recall their starting point back then according to a WFAA article from July 8 which says,
“To me, when you eat our product, it reminds you of home. It reminds you of your grandma,” said Darla McCuen.
McCuen and her sister, Nita Briggs, are co-owners of Kookie Haven. The women brought the small, family-owned bakery from Mesquite to Oak Cliff five years ago. They had big dreams in sight.
“When we came, we were so excited, because we felt we had finally found the right spot,” said McCuen.
“Nita said that when we first started here, that if we didn’t do Kookie Haven we’d do the world a disservice. That’s a little saddening, because the world didn’t get a chance to know us. That’s the part that’s sad to me. Is that they didn’t get a chance to know who we really are,” McCuen tearfully shared.
The family would like to extend their thank you and love to every customer who made them feel that they belonged in Dallas.
