DMA Expands Collection with Emerging Artists

Dallas Art Fair Foundation funds Dallas Museum of Art’s acquisitions at this year’s event with $100,000 budget, according to a DMagazine article which reports,

“In 2016, the Dallas Art Fair Foundation, the fundraising arm of the fair, created an acquisition fund that allows the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art curator to select works to add to the museum’s collection. This year, Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck, the Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, had a budget of $100,000 to spend on art, and she stretched it to purchase 12 pieces.

For her tour of the 88 galleries exhibiting at the fair’s 15th iteration, which takes place in the Fashion Industry Gallery April 21-23 (day passes cost $25), Brodbeck was joined by fellow DMA curators Dr. Vivian Li and Dr. Nicole R. Myers. They say they selected works from local and international artists with an eye for expanding the museum’s representation of artists from the Asian, Latin American, and African diaspora.”

The museum’s acquisitions reflect its commitment to diversity and representation. The artists, hailing from around the world, challenge traditional art forms and preconceived notions of identity with humor and beauty, according to a Dallas Innovates article. They say,

‘“The acquisitions made at this year’s fair are perhaps the most expansive yet, representing our commitment to expanding representation in our collection from artists of the Asian, Latin American, and African diaspora,” Brodbeck said in a statement. “From Dallas to Mongolia, these artists respond to our challenging contemporary moment with humor and beauty, reinventing art historical traditions, creating alternative worlds, and challenging our preconceived notions of divisions based on identity.””

The Dallas Art Fair contributed works to the Dallas Museum of Art, integrating pieces from around the world and artists at different stages of their careers. The $100,000 grant came from various donors.
