Texas Instruments development set on 2022 in Sherman

Dallas-based Texas Instruments have recently unveiled a massive construction project to start on 2022 in Sherman according to a Cleanroom Technology article from November 17 which reports,

“Texas Instruments has announced plans to begin construction next year on its new 300-millimeter semiconductor wafer fabrication plants (or fabs) in Sherman, Texas.

The North Texas site has the potential for up to four fabs to meet demand over time, as semiconductor growth in electronics, particularly in industrial and automotive markets, is expected to continue well into the future. Construction of the first and second fabs is set to begin in 2022.

“TI’s future analog and embedded processing 300-mm fabs at the Sherman site are part of our long-term capacity planning to continue to strengthen our manufacturing and technology competitive advantage and support our customers’ demand in the coming decades,” said Rich Templeton, TI’s Chairman, President and CEO. “Our commitment to North Texas spans more than 90 years, and this decision is a testament to our strong partnership and investment in the Sherman community.”

According to their website, Texas Instruments is primarily concerned with the invention and development of electronics by utilizing and improving semiconductors to further the progress of the world especially in industrial and automotive markets. In it they say,

“For decades, we have operated with a passion to create a better world by making electronics more affordable through semiconductors. We were pioneers in the transition of the world from vacuum tubes to transistors and then to integrated circuits (ICs) – and we’ve been advancing IC technology and the ability to reliably produce ICs in high volumes for decades. Each generation of innovation builds upon the last to make technology smaller, more efficient, more reliable and more affordable – making it possible for semiconductors to go into electronics everywhere. We think of this as Engineering Progress

Our passion to create a better world by making electronics more affordable through semiconductors is alive today as we help our customers develop new applications, particularly in the industrial and automotive markets.

We design, manufacture, test and sell analog and embedded semiconductors that help our nearly 100,000 customers around the globe create differentiated applications in markets that include industrial, automotive, personal electronics, communications equipment and enterprise systems.”

The construction project in Sherman is will also be contemplated with further developments in other sites as Sherman is an ideal site for the market and production according to a Dallas Morning News article from November 17 which reports,

“Two additional plants could be added at the 4.7 million-square-foot site in Grayson County to meet future chip demand. The company said the plants could employ as many as 3,000 workers when complete.

“Sherman provides some unique advantages such as a competitive business environment, access to a highly trained technical workforce and an existing supplier base,” TI senior vice president of technology and manufacturing Kyle Flessner said in a statement. “The proximity to our other manufacturing operations in Dallas and Richardson will help us further scale our efforts and build on operational efficiencies as we expand our 300-millimeter manufacturing presence in North Texas.”

While the completion of the construction project wasn’t specified, Texas Instruments made it clear that the chip production is set to start by 2025.
