For winning the trophy for the first time in more than 60 years, the Dallas ISD called the Golden Bears for a proper recognition according to a Fox 4 News article from January 27 which reports,
“The state champion South Oak Cliff football team was recognized at Wednesday’s Dallas ISD school boarding meeting.
The team brought home the district’s first state football championship in more than 60 years.
Last month, the Golden Bears won the 5A Division Two State Title, beating Liberty Hill at AT&T Stadium. This is South Oak Cliff’s first state title in school history.
Head Coach Jason Todd was honored with a plaque on behalf of the board where he vowed his team would be back in the championship next year.”
However, their recognition didn’t stop with Dallas ISD alone as the whole city paraded their victory with Dallas Mayor Johnson officially holding a South Oak Cliff Day for the champions according to a WFAA article from January 22. They say,
“Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson declared Saturday “South Oak Cliff Day” in honor of the Golden Bears’ historic title, which they earned in a December with a win over Liberty Hill at AT&T Stadium.
On Saturday morning, more than 20 Dallas ISD schools, bands and drill teams participated in a downtown parade for South Oak Cliff.
The parade started at 10:30 a.m. at Pearl and Main in downtown and proceeded up Main, before looping around to City Hall.
The day culminated in a celebration outside City Hall, featuring Mayor Eric Johnson, U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson and other local leaders.”
Aside from bringing home a trophy title since 1950, the Golden Bears also made it possible for their head coach Jason Todd to become the first Black high school coach to earn such a title and trophy since 1990.
