A tragic accident in Dallas claimed the life of a pregnant woman, and her child was born but later died. The accident occurred on August 5 when a woman who was nine months pregnant rode home from a baby shower with her 15 year old son in Dallas. The son had his learner’s permit. While driving, he lost control of his vehicle in southwest Dallas, and it flipped several times. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, and her baby was delivered. Tragically, the baby died eight days later.

This devastating accident serves as a precaution for pregnant women who are travelling to follow some basic safety tips. First, if you are travelling by car, absolutely use a seat belt. It’s dangerous not to. Make sure the lap belt is below your belly – not across or above the belly. Also, always use the shoulder belt. Many pregnant women are concerned about air bags, but make sure yours are turned on. For long trips, be sure to take frequent breaks to stop and stretch your legs.

If you need to fly during pregnancy, check with your doctor. You will also need to check with the airline – all have different policies on flight during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester. If you do have to travel towards the end of the pregnancy, bring some medical records with you. You will also want to take off your shoes and elevate your legs, particularly for long flights, because you will be more susceptible to blood clots while you are pregnant. Stretch and walk the aisle every hour as much as you can. Finally, drink lots of fluids so that you don’t become dehydrated.

Traveling during pregnancy can be safe as long as proper precautions are taken. However, not all other drivers on the roads are safe.
