Mark Cuban has announced the official date for the jersey retirement ceremony of Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki according to a Dallas Morning News article from November 19 which reports,
“The Mavericks on Friday announced that the retirement of Nowitzki’s No. 41, will in fact occur during Mavericks season No. 41, specifically during a ceremony following the Dallas-Golden State game.
The news release purposely did not provide many details about the ceremony itself, so as not to spoil the element of surprise, but we now know that NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Cuban and Mavericks coach Jason Kidd are scheduled to take part in the ceremony.
There was no mention in the release of “the biggest, most badass statue ever” that Cuban promised on the night of April 9, 2019, during the Nowitzki career-celebration ceremony that featured tributes from Scottie Pippen, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Shawn Kemp and Detlef Schrempf.
Perhaps the statue will be unveiled on Jan. 5, which will mark two years, eight months and 27 days since Nowitzki’s retirement announcement. Or maybe it will be unveiled at a later date, as part of a gradual rollout of Nowitzki fetes, to go along with the Oct. 30, 2019, naming of Nowitzki Way in front of American Airlines Center.”
The jersey retirement on January 5 will be celebrated because of Nowitzki’s all time achievements and of course, his revolutionary influence in the game of basketball according to a Clutch Points article from November 18 which observes,
“Dirk is arguably the best player to ever suit up for the Mavs franchise, making 14 All-Star teams, winning MVP in 2007, and capturing an NBA title in 2011 with Dallas. He was also recently named to the NBA 75 Anniversary Team, which is a massive testament to just how special he was.
Nowitzki played his entire 21-year career with the Mavs, leading them to 15 playoff appearances in the process. Dallas acquired the German in a draft-night trade with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1998 and well, the rest is history.
To this day, Dirk remains a part of the Mavs organization as well. He is currently a special advisor and has formed quite a friendship with franchise superstar Luka Doncic, who has already broken various different records previously set by Nowitzki.”
While the Dirk’s jersey retirement itself is an anticipated event ever since his retirement in 2019, the ticket prices for the event are going of the roof as the event will also hold a game against the Golden State Warriors according to a Forbes article from November 19 which says,
“The Mavericks are at home that night, taking on the Golden State Warriors. Already a hot ticket—Steph Curry and the Warriors currently have the best record in the league—the inclusion of the ceremony honoring Nowitzki only fuels interest in the game. Ticket prices are already reflecting that.
Single verified resale tickets for the game start at $264 for an upper-level seat on Ticketmaster, as of this writing. The most expensive single verified resale ticket runs $1,500 for a lower bowl seat. A courtside pair of verified resale tickets cost $12,075 each.
Prices on StubHub, a popular resale marketplace, are similar. Single upper-level tickets also start at $264. Floor seats currently run for as much as $6,000 for a single ticket.”
Regardless of the price and game against the Warriors, fans who are lucky enough to attend the event will be able to get to see a museum-like display of Dirk’s memorabilia collection including his NBA title ring, jerseys, shoes and more.
