A fatal accident involving two tractor trailers and a motorcycle shut down Interstate 30 for several hours last week. The accident occurred just before 4 a.m. on Tuesday. The road reopened just before 8 a.m., making Dallas rush-hour traffic a nightmare for commuters.
The accident occurred when the motorcyclist lost control of the motorcycle. One of the tractor trailers ran over the man and then crashed. The victim’s body was found near the rear tires of one of the tractor trailers. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man has been identified as a married 27 year old man with five children.
There are over seven million motorcycles on U.S. highways. Motorcyclists are at a much greater risk of harm than drivers and occupants of other vehicles – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident than individuals in passenger cars. The leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes is head injuries. Studies have shown that in the majority of crashes involving an automobile and a motorcycle, the driver of the automobile is at fault. In most cases, the automobile’s driver failed to see the motorcyclist.
