A devastating tragedy occurred earlier this month when a young mother and her two small children were killed by a drunk driver. The accident occurred about 42 miles southwest of Dallas, when a 53 year old Fort Worth man who was driving his truck the wrong direction on U.S. Highway 67 near County Road 810 at about 1 a.m, hit a Ford Mustang with four people inside. Just before the accident occurred Alvarado police received a call about the erratic driver but weren’t able to respond in time to prevent the fatal collision.
The 22 year old woman, her two year old son, and five year old son were pronounced dead at the scene. A third child, the woman’s sister, was flown to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. All four people in the vehicle were wearing the proper seat belts or car seats.
The drunk driver was arrested for three counts of murder and one count of intoxication assault. The man’s blood alcohol content was .240, which is almost three times the legal limit, almost three hours after the crash occurred. The man already had convictions for drunk driving in Denton and Tarrant Counties. Containers of alcohol were found in the man’s truck. The drunk driver also sustained injuries due to the accident and was hospitalized.
This accident shows what a devastating toll drunk driving can take on a family. A mother and her two young sons were killed because of the careless actions of a man who had been convicted of drunk driving twice in the past. Drunk driving can not only kill, but also can cause permanent, debilitating injuries.
