“After learning the COMO Motel located on U.S. Highway 75 had been purchased by an unknown buyer, residents in Richardson organized to keep the local landmark in place.
On June 12, 2023, a group of residents began an online campaign for the conservation of the motel by opening a Facebook account, a website and a petition on Change.org called “Save the COMO” that managed to gather over 2,000 signatures in a week.”
After its recent sale, the fate of Richardson’s Como Motel hangs in the balance, prompting passionate efforts to save its historic legacy, according to a Dallas Observer article. They say,
“The Como Motel went up for sale two weeks ago after 67 years in operation, and an unknown buyer purchased the property through a real estate broker. Several Richardson residents confirmed the motel’s purchase and the new owner’s plans for the site.
“As a resident and a business owner, it would be devastating to see the Como Motel torn down,” says musician and Beyond the Bar co-owner Reid Robinson. “It’s a rich icon, a gateway to our city, a historic landmark.”
Some nearby residents and business owners are stepping up to try to stop the bulldozers from turning the roadside motel into a flat pancake of memories with a petition called Save the Como.”
The Como’s influence spreads through Richardson, from businesses named after it to preserving its history as the city evolves.
