A 9 year old girl was killed in a freak boating accident in Cedar Creek Lake, southwest of Dallas. There were four children on board the accident, all of whom had life jackets on. The 9 year old girl became tangled in a rope and then fell overboard next to the boat’s motor. No alcohol was involved in the accident. Experts say the father was operating the boat in a safe manner.
Although it appears that no one was to blame for this accident, in many cases the operator of the boat or the boat’s manufacturer is at fault for the accident. Operators of boats and other personal watercraft, such as jet skis, have a legal responsibility to safely operate the watercraft and to protect not only their passengers but also other people on the water.
Every year Texans are killed or injured on rivers, lakes and ponds because of the negligence of boat drivers. Some of those accidents involve a direct collision – when a person is struck or run over by a boat. Other boat accidents involve passengers who have been ejected from a boat because the boat was recklessly operated. Some common causes of boat accidents in the Dallas area include intoxication, driving too fast, injuries involving propellers, failing to keep a proper lookout, and defective boating equipment.
