The bald eagles at White Rock Lake who left briefly during the summer have returned and are now building nests according to a Dallas Morning News article. They say,
“The bald eagles that were first spotted last year near White Rock Lake have been causing a stir for the past several weeks.
After leaving the area briefly during the summer, the eagles are back, city officials say. And now they are building a second nest, fueling hopes that they will have offspring next spring.
Their hopes were rekindled when the pair rebuilt a nest, but city officials who specialize in wildlife thought the birds had a slim chance of having offspring this season. They didn’t know if the pair would even stay in the area.
Now, city officials say they are confident the birds are back and here to stay.”
The city has taken extra steps in ensuring the eagles are safe and taken care of to the point of imposing a huge fine against those who would intrude the eagles’ nest according to a WFAA article. They say,
“Anyone who takes an eagle or any part of their nest could face penalties of up to $100,000.
As a result, the city had taken extra steps to protect the eagles, including temporary fencing near the parking lot and signs telling visitors to stay away from the nest.”
Fencing was put up around the lake park last season to keep people from disturbing the birds that were federally protected. There are no plans to build fencing around the park this time. Instead, signs asking people to keep their distance from the birds will be put up.
